Dear Friends,

Here is a good article sent by Dr. Arsenio Martin of Fort Arthur , Texas ..
Enjoy reading.

THE DIFFERENCE

The difference between the poor countries and the rich ones is not the age of the country:

This can be shown by countries like India & Egypt , that are more than 2000 years old, but are poor.

On the other hand, Canada , Australia & New Zealand , that 150 years ago were inexpressive, today are developed countries, and are rich.

The difference between poor & rich countries does not reside in the available natural resources.

Japan has a limited territory, 80% mountainous, inadequate for agriculture & cattle raising, but it is the second world economy. The country is like an
immense floating factory, importing raw materials from the whole world and exporting manufactured products.

Another example is Switzerland , which does not plant cocoa but has the best chocolate in the world. In its little territory they raise animals and plant the soil during 4 months per year. Not enough, they produce dairy products of the best quality! It is a small country that transmits an image of security, order & labor, which made it the world’s strongest, safest place.

Executives from rich countries who communicate with their counterparts in poor countries show that there is no significant intellectual difference.

Race or skin color are also not important: immigrants labeled lazy in their countries of origin are the productive power in rich European countries.

What is the difference then? The difference is the attitude of the people, framed along the years by the education & the culture & flawed tradition.

On analyzing the behavior of the people in rich & developed countries, we find that the great majority follow the following principles in their lives:

1. Ethics, as a basic principle.
2. Integrity.
3. Responsibility.
4. Respect to the laws & rules.
5. Respect to the rights of other citizens.
6. Work loving.
7. Strive for savings & investment.
8. Will of super action.
9. Punctuality.
10. and of course…Discipline

In poor countries, only a minority follow these basic principles in their daily life.

The Philippines is not poor because we lack natural resources or because nature was cruel to us. In fact, we are supposedly rich in natural resources.

We are poor because we lack the correct attitude. We lack the will to comply with and teach these functional principles of rich & developed societies.

If you do not forward this message nothing will happen to you. Your pet will not die, you will not be fired, you will not have bad luck for seven years, and also, you will not get sick or go hungry.

But those may happen because of your lack of discipline & laziness, your love for intrigue and politics, your indifference to saving for the future, your stubborn attitude.

If you love your country, let this message circulate so that many Filipinos could reflect about this, & CHANGE, ACT!

2G mobile phones account for the majority of the handsets currently functional worldwide. They only work on GSM, CDMA, TDMA or PCD networks and offer less advantages than the new generation phones which come with support for 3G. Most probably, as time goes by, all 2G networks will be completely replaced with new 3G (or equivalent) ones.Japan, one of the most evolved countries in terms of telecommunications, is now offering us a glimpse of how the mobile future looks like: no 2G phones. AFP reports that, in the first month of 2008, not a single 2G handset was sold on the Japanese market, all the commercialized mobile phones being 3G enabled.

Japan was the first country to inaugurate a 3G network, in 2001, when NTT DoCoMo (currently the largest mobile carrier in the country) started to provide 3G services. Even so, Hello Kitty’s homeland is not the first to dump 2G phones, as this has already happened in South Korea.

Since Japanese consumers no longer buy 2G phones, these will soon disappear completely from the market. Which is not bad at all, since 3G offers things that 2G can only dream about, like high speed Web access and downloads, or various interactive features. Moreover, 3G networks are excellent for mobile TV broadcasts – one of the main reasons why more than 50% of the Japanese subscribers use mobile TV services.

While in North America 3G is rapidly being accepted by consumers, in Europe less than 10% of the mobile users have 3G handsets. However, it’s clear that 3G represents the future of mobile communications and all operators and handset producers should acknowledge this fact. Hear that, Apple? 2G will soon become obsolete, so you’d better bring the 3G iPhone faster. Many users even think you should have packed 3G connectivity in it from the beginning, but hey, they’re no Steve Jobs.

Boy, I think Playboy magazine is beginning to relax its hotness standards just a tiny little bit, and you can’t imagine how sad that thought makes me. I mean, really – despite playing for the opposite side (you know, being an iconic male landmark and so on), Playboy is one of the magazines which accounts for my friends and I having a lot of fun while not actually enjoying the purely sexually explicit part. So, imagine my… let’s call it surprise when I came across these shots of Maria Kanellis celebrating the fact that she was allowed to spread them for Playboy and make us girls all jealous because, you know, she’s got the moves and the boobs and the magazine cover. So, kudos to her – and from my part, I was actually ready to allow myself to be entertained by Maria here – only trouble is, it seems that this month’s playmate is still in need of some extra grooming.

And when I say grooming, I mean showing a little bit of razor loving to her armpit, or else stop flashing it around Beyoncé-style. Not that we mind too much, but I for once used to have a better opinion of WWE Divas, especially one with Maria’s potential for showing off her fierce charms in various compromising and less compromising circumstances. So, as I was saying, Maria looks quite thrilled to have exposed her charms for the entire world to see, and we’re in turn happy she overcame her initial shyness and agreed to step in her predecessor’s footprints and pose naked herself. And still, I can’t quite get over the unshaved ‘pit. Is that a pre-requisite for Playboy launch parties? Someone tell me, because I just don’t know anymore.

The unshaven pit is one thing, the bloody elbow is quite a separate issue. I thought ladies (even former female wrestlers) who come out to promote their own naked spreads – in other words, convince people to part with their hard-earned cash for a glimpse of their charms – usually had to be a little more careful when leaving the house. And by careful, I mean “check their elbows for sores and scrapes”, “shave” and “check if you’re wearing enough clothes to look half decent”. And I’m afraid Maria failed two out of three demands, which makes me think – am I being too pretentious by any chance?

Buddha means ‘awake,’ and some Buddhist monks seem to have taken the name a tad too far and literally. On Tuesday, Thai officials have asked monks to avoid using social networking sites to woo women, according to Reuters. One advocacy group found that some of the holy men, instead of sharing their enlightenment, were actually trying to convince women to come to their temple and have sex with them. I remember the peons in Warcraft III saying “I’m awake!” when idle and clicked upon, and there’s a rather ironic similarity to the present situation.

The Thai police in the northeast detained a monk who was accused of using the Internet to get a woman to visit him in his room at the temple and raped her. It is not uncommon, the media in the Asian country report, as similar cases have happened before, the degradation hitting rock bottom with Buddhist monks using or selling drugs.

“I call on Hi5 users to tell the monks to leave the site if they are found using it,” junior minister Jakrapob Penkair told reporters after a Buddhist monitoring group had said that some monks had been flirting on the popular social network. Meanwhile, a senior Culture Ministry official said that instead of banning the monks from accessing the Internet, they should instead be encouraged to teach the young the path to spiritual enlightenment. Many barbaric, Geean ancient cultures believed that while climaxing during sexual intercourse, a person is closer to God. It’s a little far-fetched but other than human carnal sins not being purged from the holy people’s bodies, I don’t see another explanation for the stone cold facts.

“Instead of using the Net to flirt with young girls, monks should find ways to preach Dharma and lead them in the right direction,” Ladda Thangsupachai, head of the Cultural Surveillance Centre, told the cited source.

Opera announced that it has made Google the default search engine for its mobile browsers, Opera Mobile and Opera Mini. From now on, mobile users that work with Opera can access Google’s search engine directly from the browser’s start page, for a quick and easy way to get the information they need.

The new mobile collaboration between Opera and Google covers all global territories except Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (no idea why is that), and includes all of Opera’s standard mobile browsers.

Opera might have chosen the G-search-engine over Yahoo (which was made the defaults search engine on Opera’s mobile browsers a year ago) following countless complaints from consumers who were unhappy they couldn’t make Google the default browser page. Moreover, Google has been the default search option on Opera’s desktop browser for many years, so it’s somehow naturally that it now became the default for mobile browsers too.

“Google and Opera have established a valuable relationship over the years and we look forward to continued collaboration on mobile products,” said Jon von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera. “With 2008 poised to be the year the mobile Web goes mainstream, Google and Opera are extending this collaboration to give our users immediate access to the quality and convenience of Google’s search results. We’re excited to extend this productive relationship and we hope that the nearly 100 million people using our mobile products will agree.”

Opera Mini and Opera Mobile are the most popular mobile browsers in the world, being used on more than 100 million handsets. Opera Mini users, for example, browse more than 1.7 billion pages monthly. Both Opera’s mobile browsers offer advanced features, specially adjusted for cell phones, including Opera Zoom, Opera Link and Speed Dial.

While Google recently introduced a new and improved search engine for mobile phones, Yahoo doesn’t seem to care too much about the mobile side of the Web. Should we say “too bad”, or should we be happy that Google won another pseudo-battle with Yahoo?

I put out a new product a couple of weeks ago. This new product has so far won 16 different awards and recommendations from software download sites. Some of them even emailed me messages of encouragement such as “Great job, we’re really impressed!”. I should be delighted at this recognition of the quality of my software, except that the ’software’ doesn’t even run. This is hardly surprising when you consider that it is just a text file with the words “this program does nothing at all” repeated a few times and then renamed as an .exe. The PAD file that described the software contains the description “This program does nothing at all”. The screenshot I submitted (below) was similarly blunt and to the point:

Even the name of the software, “awardmestars”, was a bit of a giveaway. And yet it still won 16 ‘awards’. Here they are:

Some of them look quite impressive, but none of them are worth the electrons it takes to display them.

The obvious explanation is that some download sites give an award to every piece of software submitted to them. In return they hope that the author will display the award with a link back to them. The back link then potentially increases traffic to their site directly (through clicks on the award link) and indirectly (through improved page rank from the incoming links). The author gets some awards to impress their potential clients and the download site gets additional traffic.

This practise is blatantly misleading and dishonest. It makes no distinction between high quality software and any old rubbish that someone was prepared to submit to a download site. The download sites that practise this deceit should be ashamed of themselves. Similarly, any author or company, that displays one of these ‘awards’ is either being naive (at best) or knowingly colluding in the scam (at worst).

My suspicions were first aroused by the number of five star awards I received for my PerfectTablePlan software. When I went to these sites all the other programs on them seemed to have five star awards as well. I also noticed that some of my weaker competitors were proudly displaying pages full of five star awards. I saw very few three or four star awards. Something smelled fishy. Being a scientist by original training, I decided to run a little experiment to see if a completely worthless piece of software would win any awards.

Having seen various recommendations for the rundenko.com submit-everywhere.com submission service on the ASP forums I emailed the owner, Mykola Rudenko, to ask if he could help with my little experiment. To my surprise, he generously agreed to help by submitting “awardmestars” to all 1033 sites on their database, free of charge.

According to the report I received 2 weeks after submissions began “awardmestars” is now listed on 218 sites, pending on 394 sites and has been rejected by 421 sites. Approximately 7% of the sites that listed the software emailed me that it had won an award (I don’t know how many have displayed it with an award, without informing me). With 394 pending sites it might win quite a few more awards yet. Many of the rejections were on the grounds of “The site does not accept products of this genre” (it was listed as a utility) rather than quality grounds.

The truth is that many download sites are just electronic dung heaps, using fake awards, dubious SEO and content misappropriated from PAD files in a pathetic attempt to make a few dollars from Google Adwords. Hopefully these bottom-feeders will be put out of business by the continually improving search engines, leaving only the better sites. I think there is still a role for good quality download sites. But there needs to be more emphasis on quality, classification, and additional content (e.g. reviews). Whether it is possible for such a business to be profitable, I don’t know. However, it seems to work in the MacOSX world where the download sites are much fewer in number, but with much higher quality and more user interaction.

Some download site owners did email me to say either “very funny” or “stop wasting my time”. Kudos to them for taking the time to check every submission. I recommend you put their sites high on your list next time you are looking for software:

www.filecart.com

www.freshmeat.net

www.download-tipp.de (German)

This is the response I got from Lothar Jung of download-tipp.de when I showed him a draft of this article:

“The other side for me as a website publisher is that if you do not give each software 5 stars, you don’t get so many back links and some authors are not very pleased with this and your website. When I started download-tipp.de, I wanted to create a site where users can find good software. So I decided the visitor is important, and not the number of backlinks. Only 10% of all programs submitted get the 5 Suns Award.”

Another important issue for download sites is trust. I want to know that the software I am downloading doesn’t contain spyware, trojans or other malware. Some of the download sites have cunningly exploited this by awarding “100% clean” logos. I currently use the Softpedia one on the PerfectTablePlan download page. It shouldn’t be too difficult in principal to scan software for known malware. But now I am beginning to wonder if these 100% clean logos have any more substance than the “five star”awards. The only way to find out for sure would be to submit a download with malware, which would be unethical. If anyone has any information about whether these sites really check for malware, I would be interested to know.

My thanks to submit-everywhere.com for making this experiment possible. I was favourably impressed by the thoroughness of their service. At only $70 I think it is excellent value compared to the time and hassle of trying to do it yourself. I expect to be a paying customer in future.

** Addendum 1 **

This little experiment has been featured on reddit.com, digg.com, slashdot.com, stumbleupon.com and a number of other popular sites and blogs. Consequently there have been hundreds of comments on this blog and on other sites. I am very flattered by the interest. But I also feel like Dr Frankenstein, looking on as my experiment gains a life of its own. If I had known the article was going to be read by so many people I would have taken a bit more time to clarify the following points:

* I have no commercial interest in, or prior relationship with, the three download sites mentioned. I singled them out because I infer from emails received that they have a human-in-the-loop, checking all submissions (or a script that passes the Turing test, which is even more praiseworthy). I offered all three a chance to be quoted in the article. Today I received a similar email from tucows.com, but they were too late to make the article. I don’t know if they read the article before they emailed me.
* I have no commercial interest in, or prior relationship with, the automatic submission service mentioned. I approached them for help, which they generously provided, free of charge.
* The only business mentioned in which I have a commercial interest is my own table planning software, PerfectTablePlan.

** Addendum 2 **

23 awards ‘won’ at the latest count.

This new research could revolutionize the life in your bedroom. The British weekly New Scientist has made a report on a new research published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine,
showing that the German gynecologist Ernst Graefenberg, in whose honor the G spot is named, might have been right six decades ago.

He was the first to describe a highly sensitive vaginal area that triggered powerful orgasms when stimulated. But this was followed by a vivid debate, as studies made by various researchers found nothing. In the new research, the author Emmanuele Jannini, of the University of L’Aquila, Italy, points that the G spot really exists, but not all the women possess it, explaining the contradictory results brought by various researches.

Jannini scanned with ultrasounds a vaginal area said to comprise the G spot in 9 women experiencing vaginal orgasms and 11 who stated they didn’t. This tissue, described by all studies claiming the existence of a G spot, is found on the frontal vaginal wall right behind the urethra. In subjects that stated they had vaginal orgasms, this tissue was significantly thicker than in the case of those who did not experience vaginal orgasms.

“Women without any visible evidence of a G spot cannot have a vaginal orgasm. For the first time, it is possible to determine by a simple, rapid and inexpensive method if a woman has a G spot or not,” Jannini told New Scientist.

Still, some researchers doubt these results, pointing that what Jannini describes the G spot could be just a structure or the internal portion of the clitoris, which can greatly vary in size.

Others think that G spot could be possessed by all women, only that its sensitivity level can vary a lot. No matter the truth, there is still some hope.

“(Women missing vaginal orgasms) can still have a normal orgasm through stimulation of the clitoris,” said Jannini.

TimeMachine 0.1
—————

The Timemachine is a program to load previous firmwares and custom firmwares from memory stick using pandora. Like devhook, but working throgh pandora and custom ipl’s, it would work even if the flash and nand ipl of the machine is destroyed. The timemachine is useful to run software that is not supported anymore, and also as a way of booting psp’s even if the internal firmware is destroyed. It can also be useful for developers to test their homebrew in different firmwares.

Currently the timemachine can install the following firmwares:

- Original 1.50 (can only be loaded on the phat)
- 1.50 with some 3.40 hw modules. Can be loaded on both, phat and slim.
- 3.40 OE (can only be loaded on phat)
- 3.60 M33 (can only be loaded on slim)

Rest of cfw will be added in the future.

Requeriments of time machine:

- The timemachine itself doesn’t require any firmware, only a pandora battery.
Timemachine nand boot in slim, requires, however, 3.90 M33-2 or greater.
- The timemachine installer requires 2.71 SE or higher.

Instructions: Copy the TIMEMACHINE folder to /PSP/GAME and run.

All firmwares can be installed on whatever PSP (slim or phat), but they can only be used in the psp indicated in the option.

Explanations of options:

- Option 1: Install iplloader. This will install the timemachine iplloader in the memory stick.
The iplloader is so small, that doesn’t require any mspformat to have been done before.

This step is necessary to run anything else.
The iplloader of the timemachine is a multiipl loader that can load multiple ipl’s accorrding
to key configurations found in the file /TM/config.txt (this file will be created by the timemachine installer).

The default configuration is to load the ipl’s with the following keys:

- 1.50: cross
- 1.50+3.40hw: circle.
- 3.40 OE: triangle.
- 3.60 M33: square
- Pandora/DC1-4 ipl (converted to TM format): digital up
- Anything else: will boot the firmware installed on flash.
(Note: as said before, in the slim,
only nand firmwares with 3.90 M33-2 or higher can boot. Neither prvious CFW nor whatever original
firmware can boot from nand when booted from a Pandora battery due to a Sony protection that has to be bypassed by the own nand ipl code).

You can modify this configuration following the instructions of the file config_readme.txt that
will be written on the /TM folder after installing the iplloadder.

- Option 2: Convert pandora IPL into TimeMachine format.

Because the ipl used in pandora and DC1-DC4 (they are all same) is not compatible with the
timemachine ipl format and user may want to load pandora/DC1-DC4 with the TM iplloader, this option
is for that.

Requeriments: the ipl of pandora/DC1-DC4 in the root of the memory stick, named “msipl.bin”.
This file is written by Pandora and DC1-DC4 installers.

After convertion, the converted ipl will be in /TM/pandora.bin.

- Option 3: Install 1.50.
It will install 1.50 which can only be run on the psp phat (for a 1.50 that can be installed on
the slim go to the next section).

Requriments: the eboot.pbp of 1.50 in the root as 150.PBP

- Option 4: Install 1.50 with 3.40 HW modules. (PSP PHAT or SLIM).
This will install a mix of 1.50 software modules with some 3.40 hardware modules, so
it can work on the psp slim. It will usually run most 1.5 homebrew.

Requriments: 1.50 and 3.40 Sony eboot.pbp in the root renamed as 150.PBP and 340.PBP,
and the 360.PSAR on the root too (to know what the 360.PSAR is, read below, in the 3.60 M33 installation section).

From 1.50 it will be extracted most modules, usually the software related ones.
From 3.40, it will be extracted a few modules, usually hardware modules.
From 3.60, it will only be extracted the wlan bios of the slim chip.

Known problems or considerations of the 1.50+3.40hw:

- The media doesn’t work fine in the XMB (music, videos, etc).
Yeah, this is known, anyways the main purpose of this firmware is to run homebrew,
as for XMB usage is better to use a more modern one.

- The “videocodec bug”, aka crappy pmf play, only happening in the slim.
For some hw incompatibilty that coudln’t been resolved yet, pmf videos, including
the gameboot, will play crappily in the slim.

This will happen also in 1.5 games you try to run, videos will play crappily.

Because PMPAVC videos also use the videocodec API, they will play crappily too.
Normal pmp (xvid) (used on pimpstreamer too) will play fine however as they are decoded by cpu.

- The exit with home with “odd colors” bug.
When exiting with home from a homebrew or game, you may see random colors at the end of the framebuffer.
Nothing important, it even gives it an accidental stylistic look

- The PC os may detect the PSP slim as a new device.
This is normal, psp slim has a different product id (pid), but 1.5 usb driver uses only the old phat
pid. Nothing important, the usb will work fine in the slim.

- Wlan. The wlan seems to be working, it has been tested using the network update download, and
pimpstreamer 201 for 1.50.

However two things are recommended:
* Turn off the wlan power save.
* Use manual IP and DNS configuration (otherwise you may have DNS problems).
If you don’t know the manual configuration for your router, just do an automatic connection
in a higher firmware, and write somewhere the data that appear in the test page at the end,
and use that info to fill the manual configuration in 1.50+3.40 hw.
* As in normal 1.50, there is no WPA support.

- Homebrew that uses some patching code over some of the module that are from 3.40,
will not work and will probably crash. This is obvious, they were coded to patch 1.50 modules

- Option 5: Install 3.40 OE.

It will install original 3.40 OE which can only be booted on the phat.
Requeriments: 1.50 and 3.40 Sony eboot.pbp on the root as 150.PBP and 340.PBP

- Option 6: Install 3.60 M33.

It will install original 3.60 M33, that can only be run on slim.
Requeriments: 360.PSAR on the root.

Because there is no 3.60 eboot on the net as the slim was shipped directly with 3.60,
the 360.PSAR is a file that has to be created on a psp running 3.60 M33.

To dump 3.60: run the program 360DUMPER that is in this release in a psp running 3.60 M33.

The result 360.PSAR is a file that uses the decrypted psar format
(what a sce psar would look without encryption), that was already used in 3.51/3.52 M33, and
it will have following size and md5 (checked anyways by the tm installer):

Size: 18189502 bytes.
MD5: EAA13343C70D9B0337C75B295474C69A

————-

Differences between running a firmware in the TimeMachine and a firmware in the flash.

Usually the time machine will run the firmware or cfw unmodified,
including its original not critical bugs.

There are some exceptions:

- In 3.40 OE a critical bug regarding the configuration file descriptor not closed is fixed
by the timemachine core patching the OE core in ram
- The TA-086 brightness is fixed for everything that has a 1.50 kernel
- The 4th level of brightness (i cannot live without it) is enabled for whatever thing,
either if it is done nativelly (3.40 OE, 3.60 M33) or by the timemachine code (1.50, 1.50+3.40hw).
- The signcheck is patched and the firmware is written unsignchecked, so it can be shared between
different psp’s.
- 8 GB and greater memory sticks are enabled everywhere.
- 1.50 an 1.50+3.40hw can run not kxploited pbp’s too.
- Flash USB doesn’t work. This is normal, the flash usb uses the lflash block device,
and in the timemachine that device is unnecesary and its implementation is a dummy one. Just use the normal memory stick usb,
as the firmware is there

Other considerations:

- Usually the firmware running the timemachine should have more free kernel memory than
the normal one, because the lfatfs module is replaced by the timemachine core which should be using less memory.
- IF you see somewhere (probably in the browser) an error 0×80010018, this is because of too
many files opened in the memory stick (as normal memory stick driver is shared with the pseudo flash one).
The timemachine core tries, however, to minimize at maximum that this error happens.

- The Time Machine works faster if you install all firmwares you are gonna use
after having formatted the memory stick, and then put everything else.

- When booting with a pandora battery in the nand firmware, remember that unless you change the battery,
you will need the same memory stick to recover from sleep mode!

- Be sure to distinguish between TM bugs and OE/M33 bugs. For example, in 3.60 M33, if your iso
running in March33 no-umd mode hangs at exit, that was a bug of 3.60 M33, not of the timemachine!

Little FAQ:

- What is loaded from nand and what from memory stick?
Only idstorage is read from nand, everything else, ipl and flash files are loaded from memory stick.
Not even a single instruction of Sony regarding the reading of flash files and partitions is executed.

In the future, the load of idstorage from memory stick is planned as an option.

- Why don’t you make a 1.50 addon for 3.90 M33 for the slim if it can run now on the slim?
Currently, it is only possible to run this 1.50+3.40hw in a TOTALLY fresh booted machine by the user.
Not even a psp cold-reseted by software can run 1.50+3.40hw after having been in 3.xx, due to some problems
related with slim hardware.
There are other implementation problems, but that one is the more critical.

The purpose of this patch is to load the fat memory stick driver of 3.71 in 3.80/3.90 to make memory stick reading work better.

Instructions:

Copy it from /F0/kd/fatmsmod.prx to the root.

Copy the FATMSPATCH to /PSP/GAME and run it.

notes:

It is probably better idea that is encrypted because it is also compressed and use less flash space.

fatmsmod of 3.71 usually works better because it has a better cache system, and usually reads on bigger blocks (in some things is worse than 3.89/3.90 like sometimes reading more data than needed – lazy prediction -).

However it uses more kernel memory, and it is unknown if it will have any kind of secondary effect running this module in 3.80/3.90.

The lags in np9660 no umd mode won’t probably be solved, as that is a different problem.

update: version 2 (link updated)

Added to the installer the check of correct checksum of fatmsmod.prx. Use only encrypted or decrypted version of file.

Music, videos, etc now work.
